5 Days in Makkah — The Complete Experience
Worship, explore, eat, and rest — a balanced five-day plan
Published 20 March 2025
Five days is the sweet spot for Makkah. Long enough to settle in, explore beyond the Haram, and build a daily rhythm — but short enough to stay energised throughout. This plan balances spiritual intensity with cultural discovery and proper rest.
- Visitors with 5-7 days total who want a structured but flexible framework
How to use this: Treat it as a framework, not a schedule. Swap days around based on your energy, the weather, and what calls to you. The key principle is alternating intense days (Umrah, hiking) with gentler ones (rest, food, culture).
Arrival & Umrah
Check in, settle, and complete your Umrah at a calm pace. No sightseeing today — focus on the rituals. Finish with a simple dinner (Al Baik, delivery, or hotel restaurant) and early sleep. Jet lag is real; don't fight it.

Morning
Fajr, Ishraq & Quiet Tawaf
Wake for Fajr and stay until Ishraq. Do a quiet tawaf in the empty mid-morning window — this is the most peaceful time at the Haram. Grab a coffee from Camel Step in Jabal Omar along Ibrahim Al Khalil street on your way back, then have a proper breakfast.

Afternoon
Rest & Recharge
Sleep until Dhuhr, then gentle Haram time — Quran reading, dhikr, or just sitting. You're still adjusting to the rhythm. Don't fight the fatigue.

Evening
Explore the Streets & Dinner
Walk through the nearby streets as the city comes alive after Maghrib. Have dinner at a local restaurant — this is your first real evening out. Early sleep.

Morning
Fajr & Breakfast
Fajr at the Haram, then breakfast at a foul shop — tamees, foul, eggs, and sweet tea. Eat properly; today is an exploration day.

Late Morning
Makkah History Walk or Kiswa Factory
Choose one: walk through Makkah's historical sites on the History Walk, or visit the Kiswa Factory to see how the Kaaba's cover is made. Depends if you want to stay close to Al Haram or explore the city further.
Central Makkah
Afternoon
2-Hour Gift Run
Get your gift shopping done today so the last two days stay focused on worship. Dates, oud, attar, prayer beads — a focused sweep through the souks while they're fresh and you still have energy. Don't leave it to the last minute.

Evening
Dinner at a Proper Restaurant
Return for Maghrib at the Haram. Then treat yourself to a proper sit-down dinner — try one of the 'Worth the Trip' restaurants like Khayal for refined Lebanese, Gurkan Sef for premium steaks, or Voi Lounge for international cuisine.

Morning
Exploring Mashaer or Jabal Noor Hike
Choose one: (A) Drive through the Mashaer — Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat — to understand the Hajj landscape outside of Hajj season. Quiet, empty, and deeply moving. (B) Early morning hike to the Cave of Hira on Jabal Noor — leave by 5:30 AM, return by 10 AM. Both are physically and spiritually rewarding.

Afternoon
Rest & Recovery
Whether you hiked or drove, the morning was full. Rest at the hotel, hydrate, and take it easy. Pray Dhuhr and Asr at the hotel or Haram.

The Int'l Museum Of The Prophet's Biography
Spend the evening at the International Museum of the Prophet's Biography on the second floor (P2) of the Clock Tower - a guided ~1-hour walk-through of the Prophet's ﷺ life with rare artefacts, a panoramic screen, a scale model of historical Makkah, and a short cinema. One of Makkah's most underrated cultural experiences. Booking ahead is recommended; entry is paid. Return for Isha at the Haram afterwards if timing allows.

Optional Second Umrah
If you have a late flight today, consider driving to Masjid Aisha to enter ihram for a second Umrah — a beautiful way to close the trip. Only do this if you have the time and energy; don't rush it.
