Masjid Al-Sayyidah Aisha (Al-Taneem)
The miqaat where Aisha entered ihram — and where you likely will too
Published 15 March 2025
After the Farewell Pilgrimage, Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ if she could perform a separate Umrah, since her original one had been incorporated into her Hajj. He sent her with her brother Abdur-Rahman to Al-Taneem, just outside the Haram boundary, where she entered ihram and returned to complete her Umrah. A mosque was built at that spot in 240 AH (854 AD). It has been rebuilt and restored repeatedly over the centuries, most recently under King Fahd, and it remains one of the most practically important mosques in Makkah given its proximity to Masjid Al Haram.
If you are staying in Makkah and want to perform a second Umrah — or if you arrived without entering ihram at a more distant miqaat — Masjid Aisha is almost certainly where you will go. Thousands of people pass through here every day for exactly that purpose.
But beyond the practical, there is something worth pausing over. Aisha (RA) wanted to perform Umrah on her own terms, and the Prophet ﷺ honoured that request. The mosque standing here is a direct result of her desire and his response. Every person who enters ihram at Al-Taneem is, in a sense, following her footsteps.
Getting there:
- Masjid Aisha is in Al-Taneem, about 7-8 km north of Masjid Al Haram
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the standard way to get there — the fare is typically 15-25 SAR from the Haram area
- Buses also run the route, especially during peak Umrah seasons
At the mosque:
- The mosque has separate facilities for men and women, including changing areas, washrooms, and wudhu facilities
- This is the closest miqaat to Masjid Al Haram — the most convenient option for those already in Makkah
- The mosque operates around the clock during peak Umrah and Hajj seasons
- Named after Aisha (RA), but also commonly referred to simply as "Masjid Al-Taneem" — taxi drivers know both names
