Jabal Thawr Cultural DistrictNew · Mar 2026
A new cultural district at the base of Jabal Thawr — historic market, gardens, and the gateway to Ghar Thawr
Until recently, Jabal Thawr was just a mountain with a trailhead. Now there's a proper cultural district at its base — a well-designed complex with a historic market, gardens, and visitor facilities. You don't need to climb the mountain to benefit from this place, though the path to Ghar Thawr starts here if you want to.

Most visitors who come to Jabal Thawr go straight for the hike, and many leave without fully understanding the significance of what happened on this mountain. The cultural district provides that context.
The highlight is a historic market set up within the district — a series of individual stalls where artisans and craftsmen showcase traditional goods like leather, water storage canisters, perfumes, and swords. It's hands-on rather than behind glass, and gives visitors a tangible sense of the trade and craft that would have existed in this region centuries ago.
Beyond the market, the district includes gardens, seating areas, and visitor facilities — a far cry from the bare, unmarked site it used to be.
The district is located at the base of Jabal Thawr, about 8 km south of the Haram.
Key things to see:
- Historic Market: Individual stalls with artisans showcasing traditional leather goods, water canisters, perfumes, and swords — interactive and worth browsing
- Gardens and seating areas: Green space and places to sit — a welcome contrast to the rocky surroundings
- Path to Ghar Thawr: The trailhead for the hike to the Cave of Thawr begins here. If you plan to climb, start early in the morning. See our Jabal Thawr & Cave of Thawr page for full details
Getting there:
- A taxi from the Haram costs 25–40 SAR
- Ask for "Jabal Thawr Cultural District" or simply "Jabal Thawr"
- Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem) work well for the return journey
- The district is fully accessible — no climbing required to enjoy the market and facilities
- If you plan to combine this with the hike to Ghar Thawr, arrive early in the morning and do the hike first while it's cool, then explore the district after descending
- There are also plans for a bus service from Jabal Thawr to Madinah along the actual route the Prophet ﷺ used during the Hijrah — not yet operating, but worth watching for
