Jabal Khandama
A mountain overlook with sweeping views of the Haram and the city below
Most visitors to Makkah never leave the valley floor. Jabal Khandama changes that. Located to the west of the Grand Mosque, this mountain offers one of the most striking viewpoints in the city — the Haram spread below you, the towers rising from the valley, and the ring of mountains that have enclosed Makkah since the time of Ibrahim.
This is reflection with a view. After days spent inside the Haram surrounded by crowds and concrete, climbing to a vantage point above the city recalibrates your perspective entirely. The quiet up here is striking compared to the intensity below.
Getting there:
- A short taxi ride from the central Haram area, or walkable from hotels on the western side
- The climb is moderate — not as demanding as Jabal Noor or Jabal Thawr, but proper footwear helps
Best time to visit:
- Early morning before the heat, or late afternoon for golden light over the city
- Avoid midday — there is no shade on the ascent
Duration: Allow 1-2 hours including the climb and time to sit at the top.
- Bring water — there are no vendors on the mountain
- The path is informal, not a maintained trail
- Best for visitors with reasonable fitness
