The Prophet's ﷺ Birthplace
Stand where the most important person in Islamic history was born
The site traditionally identified as the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sits in the area which was formerly Suq al-Layl, a short walk from Masjid Al Haram.
The original house is long gone, and the location now houses the Maktabat Makkah al-Mukarramah (Makkah Library). But knowing that this spot is where the Prophet ﷺ entered the world in 570 CE carries its own weight.
This isn't a grand monument or a museum with exhibits. It's a building along the Grand Mosque plaza that most visitors walk past without knowing what it is. But for those who understand its significance, standing here — even briefly — adds a layer to the Makkah experience that the Haram alone doesn't provide.
The Prophet ﷺ was born in this area, grew up in these streets, walked to the Kaaba from here, and received his first revelation in the mountains visible from this neighbourhood.
Getting there:
- Walk from Masjid Al Haram - it is a two minute walk from the sa'i exit
- Head toward the Suq al-Layl area; ask locals for "Mawlid al-Nabi" and most will point you in the right direction
- The building functions as a public library and may be open during standard hours
What to expect:
- The site is a modern building — the original structure has not survived
- There are no guided tours or interpretive displays
- The visit itself is brief — the value is in knowing where you're standing
- The identification of this site is based on traditional accounts — historians note some scholarly debate
- The building may have restricted access at times — don't be disappointed if you can only view from outside
- Early morning is best for walking this area — less traffic and heat
