Traditional Craft-Making & Taste of Makkah
Make your own misbaha and taste traditional Makkan food in one hands-on session
Most souvenirs from Makkah are bought in five minutes from a shop near the Haram. This experience is the opposite of that. You sit down, you string your own misbaha bead by bead, and you eat traditional Makkan food while you work. The rosary you take home was made by your own hands in the city of the Prophet's birth. That means something — more than any factory-stamped keychain ever will.
There is a meditative quality to threading prayer beads that most people do not expect. The repetition, the focus, the feel of each bead under your fingers — it slows you down in a way that Makkah's intensity rarely allows. And doing it while surrounded by the smells of traditional Makkan cuisine, with Arabic coffee being refilled beside you, turns a craft workshop into something genuinely memorable.
The misbaha itself becomes a different kind of souvenir. Every time you use it for dhikr after you return home, you will remember the afternoon you spent making it. It is a physical object tied to a specific memory — and that is worth far more than anything bought off a shelf.
This is a guided workshop experience, typically run by local cultural operators or artisans in Makkah.
The craft session:
- Misbaha making: You choose your beads — options typically include wood, stone, crystal, and resin in various colours. A guide walks you through the stringing technique, tassel-tying, and traditional bead counts (33 or 99 beads). No prior skill needed; everyone finishes with a complete, usable misbaha.
- Duration: The craft portion takes about 60-90 minutes depending on your pace. There is no rush.
The food:
- Traditional Makkah dishes: Expect local staples — think saleeg (creamy rice), mandi or kabsa, fresh bread, and seasonal sides. This is home-style food, not restaurant food.
- Arabic coffee and tea: Served throughout the session. Dates and sweets are standard.
