Key Locations Around Al Haram
A practical guide to the important landmarks near the Grand Mosque
The area around Masjid Al Haram is vast and can be disorienting, especially on your first visit. Knowing the key landmarks helps you navigate confidently.
The main gates
The Grand Mosque has dozens of gates. The most useful to know:
- King Abdulaziz Gate (Gate 1): The main entrance, facing the Kaaba from the north side
- King Fahd Gate: Large entrance on the south side, closest to the Jabal Omar area
- Umrah Gate: Used primarily during Umrah, well-signposted
- Saee exit: Where you exit after completing sa'i between Safa and Marwa — useful to orientate yourself for the walk back
Tip: Memorise the gate number closest to your hotel. This makes finding your way back much easier, especially at night.
Jabal Omar
The large modern development on the western side of the Haram. Home to several hotels, restaurants, and shops. A useful landmark because it's visible from many angles. The pedestrian walkways through Jabal Omar connect to several Haram gates.
Clock Tower
The iconic clock tower is visible from almost everywhere in central Makkah. It sits directly adjacent to the Haram on the south side. The tower complex includes a shopping mall, food court, and several hotels. A reliable orientation point — if you can see the clock tower, you know which direction the Haram is.
Al Misfalah
The area to the east of the Haram. Known for more affordable hotels and a lively street food scene. Walking from Al Misfalah to the Haram takes 5-15 minutes depending on exactly where you are.
Kudai area
South of the Haram, a residential and commercial district. Many mid-range hotels here with shuttle services to the Haram. Slightly further out but often better value.
Ibrahim Al Khalil Street
One of the main roads leading to the Haram from the south. Lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels. A major pedestrian route — follow the flow of people towards the Haram.
Practical tips
- Use the Haram clock tower as your north star — it's visible from most areas
- Take a photo of your hotel's location on a map before heading out
- Learn one reliable walking route between your hotel and the Haram, then explore alternatives
- The Haram expansion means construction is ongoing — routes may change, so stay flexible
